If you’re looking for a unique appetizer, these Bacon-Wrapped Onion Cream Cheese Stuffed Dates are it!  I’m not a huge fan of dates but when you fill a sweet date with an onion-y cream cheese mixture, wrap it in salty bacon, and baked it to crispy perfection, they are awesome!  The way the sweet dates are complemented by salty and savory ingredients really makes them in a class of their own.  If you have a party coming up and want people to talk about amazing food, this recipe needs to be added to the menu!

Ryan came home the other day with a 10 lb. box of dates!  What am I going to do with 10 lbs?  We ate a few plain.  They’re good by themselves but why settle for good? I knew I could make them great.  These bacon-wrapped stuffed dates would make an amazing finger food at any gathering. And with as many dates as we had we could almost feed an army.

Dates are dried like raisins.  They have a very chewy texture and are very sweet.  What better combination than cream cheese and salty bacon?

These bacon-wrapped dates will be a star at your next party.  The sweet date stuffed with tangy, oniony, cream cheese and wrapped in salty, crisp bacon make it delicious and one-of-a-kind!  I think I ate about half the batch myself.

These little bites of goodness were simple to make. Here’s what I used to make them (plus salt and pepper):

Ingredients Needed:

  • Dates
  • Bacon
  • Cream cheese
  • Green onion
Ingredients

I made just under 40 bacon-wrapped stuffed dates.  It came down to how many slices of bacon I had (which was about 19).

Filling

To start, chop the green onions, add them to the cream cheese along with some salt and pepper.

Make filling

I’ve found the easiest way to stuff dates is by using a piping bag fitted with a No. 12 piping tip, a small round opening.  The Wilton No. 12 round tip works well.  The tip fit perfectly into the date and the zip-lock bag made for quick and easy clean up.

Fill Dates

Now it’s time to fill the dates. Pipe the cheese filling into each date. If you end up with extra filling it pairs beautifully with a bagel.

Wrap in Bacon

After the dates are stuffed, wrap each in a half a slice of regular cut bacon.  If you use thick cut, the bacon won’t get super crispy given the bake times in this recipe.  Use a toothpick to secure the bacon. It will double as a convenient handle to pick these little gems with.

Bake

Next, it’s time for the oven. Bake these appetizers at 400°F for 15-20 minutes.

ready to be baked

If you prefer crispy bacon feel free to cook a couple of minutes longer. If chewy is your jam lessen the bake time by a minute or two.

Baked dates

That’s it! They can be served immediately or refrigerated for later. I sprinkled mine with some extra green onion pieces to add a little freshness and color to the plate.
