A delicious, restaurant-quality sausage gravy that only requires 5 basic ingredients and can be made in 15 minutes or less.
Over the last couple of weeks, dinners have been a little more interesting than usual. With some grocery items being hard to come by, I figured I’d share a super simple, delicious “breakfast for dinner” we had last night.
This sausage gravy is the bomb. It’s creamy, spicy and so good with just about any breakfast item you can think of.
Being a wife to a man born in Canada, the idea of a “breakfast” poutine (a Canadian specialty that is basically french fries smothered in gravy) came to mind. I love this gravy, my kids love french fries… it seemed like a win, win. Little did I know it was a jackpot of food heaven gold!
Although the classic item to serve with this kind of gravy would be biscuits, I didn’t want to go through the effort of making homemade biscuits (here’s a great biscuit recipe if you’re looking for something a little more traditional), so I reached for the air fryer and frozen french fries.
It was a match made in heaven and only took about 15 minutes to throw together.
WHAT CAN I SERVE WITH SAUSAGE GRAVY?
You can serve this sausage gravy with a lot of different items. Here’s a list of a few that would be great:
- french fries
- homemade buttermilk biscuits
- hashbrowns
- toast
- baked potatoes
- mashed potatoes
Usually, sausage gravy is served with a starch (like potatoes) or carbs (aka toast or biscuits and gravy). Whichever way you go, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with this gravy.
HOW TO MAKE SAUSAGE GRAVY:
This gravy is really easy to make. It only requires 5 ingredients. Check’em out:
- sausage – kind of a no brainer there. đ
- flour – helps thicken the gravy
- salt and pepper – add flavor and taste
- milk – makes the “gravy” part
STEPS FOR MAKING PEPPER GRAVY IN 15 MINUTES OR LESS:
First, brown the sausage. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
Next, sprinkle the flour right on the browned sausage. Add the pepper and salt. Stir until all the flour has been incorporated (about 1 minute).
When flour combines with fat it creates a rue (this is what will thicken the gravy). By adding the flour at this point, it will combine with the fat of the sausage which will help eliminate clumps as the flour cooks. This will keep your gravy smooth and creamy.
Last, add the milk. Make sure to use 2% fat or higher (whole milk is fantastic). This will give you a much creamier gravy than if you use skim or 1% (but if that’s all you have, it will still be good). Bring the gravy to a soft boil and cook for 3-5 minutes until it begins to thicken.
Cool slightly and that’s it. It’s ready!
PRO TIP: only add as much flour as the recipe calls for. The sausage gravy will be slightly thin when it’s done. This is normal. The gravy will thicken as it cools.
P.S. This easy sausage gravy with french fries was a perfect “breakfast for dinner.” Add it to your next weekly meal plan.

Hi Debbie. Thanks for the feed back and for sharing. Have a great day.
I like this recipe. Very easy! The only change I would make next time is to use less pepper- maybe just a 1/4tsp. A full tsp was overpowering! Otherwise it was great!
