Are you sick of stogy clumpy rice?

Do you want to learn the secrets of making fluffy delicious rice right in the Instant Pot?

Rice is a staple starch in our house. We love adding rice to the dinner menu. Not only because it’s inexpensive but because it offers a carrier for flavor, is super easy to make AND tastes amazing. On it’s own, rice can be fairly bland but this recipe is fantastic on it’s own or paired with recipes like my Creamy Crockpot Ranch Chicken & Veggies or Wok Chicken & Broccoli.

HOW TO MAKE FLAVORFUL INSTANT POT WHITE RICE:

This recipe is so easy. With minimal prep and the Instant Pot doing all the work and how much flavor this recipe has, you are going to love it.

WHAT KIND OF RICE SHOULD I USE?

Did you know there are more than 120,000 varieties of rice. Yep! That’s a big number. On any given day were I live, I can usually find a dozen different kinds and varieties.

We love Jasmine rice. Jasmine rice is readily available in most grocery stores. If you prefer long grain white rice or basmati rice, feel free to use either of those in this Instant Pot white rice recipe. The cook time for all three kinds will be about the same.

RINSE THE RICE:

After selecting your rice, it’s time to rinse it. This step is very important so don’t skip it. Rice can come out of a bag with dust and starch on it. Rinsing the rice will help remove any dust and unwanted rice starch.

Removing the excess starch from the rice will help the white rice cook beautifully and come out fluffy rather than clumpy and stogy.

HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD I RINSE RICE BEFORE COOKING?

Up until recently I would have said, “rinse once or twice and you’ll be good” but not anymore.

I had the opportunity to attended a sushi class where an instructor taught me how to make sushi, all the way down to the rice.

The instructor of the class was from Korea and had been making rice and sushi since she was a small child. She explained that for best results we should rinse rice at least 5 times if not 10 before cooking. This removes all unwanted particles and helps achieve the best texture and flavor possible.

She explained that in parts of Asian, it’s standard practice to wash rice up to 20 times. DANG!

My new rule of thumb is, at least 5 rinses or until the water runs crystal clear.

PRO TIP: Always rinse rice with cold water. I like using a rice strainer to rinse my rice but you can also use a large sifter/colander or a bowl, just be careful not to dump all your rice out if you use the bowl method.

RICE TO LIQUID RATIO:

I’m sure there is some debate over the rice to liquid ratio. Some say 1:1 when others say 1:1.5 or even 1:1.75. My family likes a softer rice so I use a 1:1.25 ratio. 1 cup rice to 1 1/4 cups liquid. If you like a softer rice, still delicious and fluffy, you can use up to a 1:1.25 ratio. I wouldn’t recommend going less than 1:1 or more than 1:1.5 ratio when cooking white rice in the instant pot because it will be too firm or too soft.

PRO TIP: Use chicken broth or water and bullion to add additional flavor to your rice. I typically use water and bullion (1 cup water to 1/2-1 teaspoon bullion) to add additional flavor to the rice.

ADD A SMALL AMOUNT OF FAT:

Research has shown that adding a small amount of fat, such as coconut oil, before cooking rice can reduce the amount of calories your body will absorb if cooled before eating.

Whether that is true or not I do it to add flavor and help with the texture of our rice.

COOKING INSTANT POT WHITE RICE:

To make perfect Instant Pot white rice I cook the rice and liquid for 4 minutes on manual HIGH then allow it to natural release for about 10 minutes.

4 minutes is enough time for the liquid to get hot and begin cooking the rice. The additional release time allows the rice to finish cooking.

This Instant Pot white rice recipe is perfect for busy weeknights because it only takes a few minutes to rinse and start the cooker then it’s inactive cook time until the rice is done.

INSTANT POT BEEPED. WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Once the cook timer goes off let the Instant Pot sit undisturbed for 10 minutes. This will allow the rice to finish cooking. Once the 10 minutes is up, carefully release the pressure by turning the pressure valve to release.

Once the pressure is out of the pot open and fluff the rice using a fork.

PRO TIP: Using a fork and gently fluffing the rice will help separate the rice grain without breaking. Be careful not to stir as this will cause the rice to break and turn mushy.

From start to finish this white rice only takes about 25 minutes. This is taking into consideration the time it takes to rinse and prepare the rice, allow the Instant Pot to come to pressure, cook and natural release it. Of those minutes, only 5 or so of those are active time.
